So I've gotten a few quotes. Ohhhhh the disparity.
Quote 1: 3 man crew (est. 3 hours to move me) + 1 hour travel time @ $100/hour = $400
Quote 2: 3 man crew (est. 2 hours to move me) + 1 hour travel time @ $86/hour = $258
Quote 3: 4 man crew (est. 5 hours to move me) + travel time (negligible) @ $120/hour = $600
FOUR GUYS TAKING FIVE HOURS!!! What will they be doing that that will take them so long?!
And what should I do about all of this?
Edit: After asking around and, as hapes suggested, checking the Better Business Bureau, I chose an entirely different mover. They were registered with the BBB and had no complaints filed against them, and they were very professional and thorough about checking what I had and what they were to move. I'm happy. It was more around the $600 mark but I feel confident like I didn't with the others. :)
The high quote seems like they might be trying to screw you. The low quote seems like they might be trying to lowball to get your business. I'd go for the middle quote.
An important thing to consider when selecting a moving company (in my experience):
check the better business bureau. We went with a company that had 3 complaints in the past three years because their quote was $1200 or so cheaper than the guys with no complaints. Well, this ended up with us having a gouge in the ceiling (small, but annoying), a broken under-bed storage container, and a smashed antique chair that was from la femme's grandfather's house. They screwed up the pricing in our favor by about $300, and I wasn't about to lose that for some minor issues, but the point is:
Quality matters, and is worth the cost, if you have a fair amount of stuff you don't want broken.
Go with the middle quote.
Ply your friends with cheap booze and threats and have them move you, like I do.

Go with the high quote. The first two seem ridiculously low.
By the way, beware of internet moving scams...almost all of them are grifters.
