Verizon?

Do I need a GSM phone?

GSM phones work in Europe. And yet, we already have a UK Pay-As-You-Go phone which will be hella cheaper to use in Europe than a US phone on any network. Plus, James's phone will undoubtedly work in Europe as it will have to because he's going to be traveling internationally some with business.

Other than a general disdain for CDMA phones out of principle, because the US doesn't like to conform to international standards, that's the only real reason I can think of for getting a GSM phone.

On a GSM carrier, I can receive text messages from international people. This is a requirement for me. My friends are in the UK. Texting is a cheap and easy way to keep in touch. It's more dynamic than email. It's fun. No one I have ever texted on Verizon from my UK phone has received the message. I can text people on T-Mobile, and my messages are received.

Is Verizon better for me?

Verizon customer service seems to think I should be able to receive international texts. And this page seems to imply that it should be possible.

Verizon has the best NYC coverage. By all accounts, it rules the East Coast.

Both my parents and James are on Verizon, as are many of my friends. Cheaper calls to the people I'll be talking to most.

So, yeah. :P I don't really know what to do.

I say go verizon. I had the best service with them all over the country. Plus, if you go to europe, you can always rent a gsm phone from tmobile or whoever while you are gone. they do rentals on daily and weekly bases, i believe.

For what it's worth... I work for a large, international company and Verizon is no longer one of our preferred vendors. And for those who do frequent International travel, we tend to go T-Mo.

Hooray, texts for meeeee on Verizon!
