Wow. The blatant racism, as pointed out, is astounding.

Crazy.

Thanks for pointing this out. I think I'm going to link.

Same picture, caption reads:
A young man drags groceries through chest-deep water in New Orleans on Tuesday.

Go for it. Link away. It's an interesting parallel.

Also, go CNN for being better at captioning.

I was sickened when I saw this. Then Josh pointed out it was two different sources, so maybe it's all how that particular paper views scavenging for supplies. Though it still makes me grit my teeth something fierce.

Yeah they are from two different sources. Which sort of annoys me vaguely. My first instinct was to try and find out how they were captioning other photos of a similar ilk.

Nonetheless, it's interesting.

... that said, I do expect more from the AP.

Perhaps it should be AFP we should be more angry at ... looting is looting, even if you're white and happen to "find" something.

Most interesting quote I read (can't recall where, perhaps the NYTimes) was that looting was the poor's revenge on society; their "fair" shake.

The biggest disgrace is the Republican weazels leaving the poor to die. No supplies? Troops "afraid" to enter the Superdome due to safety concerns?

We can airlift hummers to fuckin' Iraq and wage a war against a source of oil, but God forbid we invade the city of New Orleans to save the impoverished Blacks, Creoles and Latinos still there.

Check out the current Yahoo page. In sidebar: 'New Orleans in Anarchy.' Weeping black female embracing child, frontal view; 'Fights, fires break out ...'

In center: 'Help those affected by this tragedy.' White couple depicted from rear embraces amidst devestation.

Gar.

Good spot on that!

They way America has handled this on the whole is atrocious I think. The death toll could have been reduced, the looting could have been avoided.

I don't want to generalise, but those people who think Americans are narrow minded jerks probably have a point.

Being an American, I tend to disagree. ;)

There are some assholes out there. However, I think you'll find that most educated Americans feel exactly the same way that you do, Gabby: apalled.

I'm not even going to comment about the current administration. We all know what a knucklehead Bush is.

The same could be said of Mr Blair...

I agree though - I didn't mean to sound general - I realise there are lots of extremely lovely and sensible Americans as there are with any race, colour or creed...the trouble is the way your govt (and it seem media from this post) is dealing with this adds fuel to those with a more narrowminded approach.

Oh, I give up!

"

I it the "post" button by mistake ...

From today's Chicago Tribune (www.ChicagoTribune.com)

"... A project to build up the levees to withstand a Category 3 hurricane was launched in 1965 after Hurricane Betsy and was supposed to be completed in 10 years, but it remains incomplete because of a lack of funding.

In recent years, funding has dropped precipitously, which some officials attributed in part to the escalating costs of the Iraq war. Funding for a drainage project in New Orleans went from $69 million in 2001 to $36.5 million in the current fiscal year, while funding for such hurricane protection projects as levees around Lake Pontchartrain declined from $10 million in 2001 to $5.7 million this year, according to figures provided by the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.).

Funding for these projects generally has trended downward since at least the last years of the Clinton administration. Congressional records show that the levee work on Lake Pontchartrain received $23 million in 1998 and $16 million in 1999. It was not clear how much the drainage project received in 1998, but records show it received $75 million in 1999.

Neither the White House nor the Corps of Engineers would confirm the numbers, nor would they provide funding levels dating to previous administrations."

I heard about that! EUGH.

It makes you so mad, doesn't it?

This makes me livid:

From the NY Times:

"The White House battled a chorus of criticism throughout the day as bloggers made much of the secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, vacationing in New York during the disaster, where she was spotted at a Broadway show and was to attend the U.S. Open. By Thursday evening, Ms. Rice had cut short her vacation and returned to Washington, where she headed to a staff meeting to discuss ways of coordinating offers of foreign assistance from more than 30 countries and organizations.

Bloggers also circulated a picture of Mr. Bush playing a guitar at an event in California on Tuesday to imply that he was fiddling while New Orleans drowned. In fact, the picture was taken when the country singer Mark Wills presented Mr. Bush with a guitar backstage at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, Calif., after Mr. Bush gave a speech marking the 60th anniversary of the Japanese surrender in World War II.

Later that day, as floodwaters poured into New Orleans, Mr. Bush returned to his ranch in Texas, then left from his ranch for Washington on Wednesday morning."

The NY Post reported that Rice was at SPAMALOT on Tuesday and thoroughly booed. She was shopping at Salvatore Farragamo on 5th Ave. Wed. afternoon when shoppers shouted at her for spending thousands while thousands went homeless.

I dunno' if any of you saw the "Concert for Relief" on NBC last night, but rapper Kanye __ had some interesting words (not scripted) that have tongues wagging here. He said, in much more non-coherent, emotional terms, everything we've said here.

And EVERYONE took notice ...

Also, did anyone see hottie CNN anchor Anderson Cooper breakdown and shout down a LA senator for all her congratulatorypraise on Wednesday -- 2 days before any relief arrived, Federal Congressmen & women were congratulating themselves for jobs well done.
